Community Profile: KUYA Community, Kaduna State
Date
April 2022
Location
Kuya, Ikara LGA, Kaduna State, Nigeria
In the heart of Kaduna State, Nigeria, lies KUYA, a resilient rural community where most residents rely on farming and small trading, with limited market access and economic opportunities.
Before our intervention, the community depended on unsafe, unreliable water sources, leading to health risks, poor sanitation, and environmental challenges.
Why We Acted
In 2022, The Sahel Initiative installed a borehole in KUYA to address four urgent needs:
- Health: Reduce waterborne diseases and improve overall well-being.
- Economic Opportunity: Free up time spent fetching water for farming, schooling, and small
businesses.
- Environmental Impact: Limit overuse of unsafe, contaminated sources.
- Gender Equality: Ease the burden on women and girls, creating space for education and
livelihoods.
